Osnabrück
In 9 AD, ancient Germanic tribes defeated 10-15 thousand Roman legionaries near Osnabruck (Battle of the Teutoburg Forest).
Osnabruck was originally a marketplace around the bishopric established by Karl the Great in 780. The first cathedral, St. Peter's, was founded in 785 and is now a monument to Romanesque Gothic architecture from the 12th century.
In 1348 was written the first unknown urban order. In 1648, the Peace of Westphalia was signed in Osnabrück and Münster. In 1811, these areas became a part of the French Empire, and Osnabrück was the administrative center of the Hautes-Ems department for a time. During the Second World War, the city was bombed 79 times by the Allies. 65% of the buildings were destroyed, even in the city center 94%.
